Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question that isn't answered here, contact us.Why do you give away websites?
We wanted to use our knowledge and expertise to provide professional, accessible websites to charities, that they would be able to easily update themselves.
How can you afford to give away websites?
The web developer Ubisan has written and given Usable Websites the code which allows us to set up websites quickly and efficiently. We work closely with Ubisan to provide websites for our beneficiaries.
Building these websites still takes time, and while we are currently applying for funding from various charitable trusts, we survive mainly on donations from the charities we have helped.
We have received funding
for a server and hosting from Awards for All.
We have also been
nominated as one of the Money Saving Experts charities of the year.
The more donations we receive - big or small - the more beneficiaries we can assist.
Some of the sites you've designed look pretty basic. Can ours look more "special"?We have received funding

We can only style websites using the materials we are given. If you can put us in touch with the person who deals with your printed materials or provide us with logos, colour scheme information and associated images then we can work with you towards a more unique design.
Can I send you a few URLs of websites that I really like the look of?Please do. This is very helpful, but it is important to remember that many of these sites will have had considerable sums spent on their graphic design element.
What will my website's URL be?
If you already have a domain name, we can make your new website appear at that domain name.
If you haven't thought about a domain name for your organisation, you really should and we can offer advice on this and help you arrange it's acquisition for a small charge through our technical partner, Ubisan.
Do you host websites too?If you haven't thought about a domain name for your organisation, you really should and we can offer advice on this and help you arrange it's acquisition for a small charge through our technical partner, Ubisan.
Yes, but we do not charge for hosting our beneficiaries' websites.
My organisation doesn't have charitable status - can you still help?
We always give priority to organisations with charitable status but if you think you deserve assistance from Usable Websites, please contact us.
What sort of content can I add to my organisation's website?
You can add images and photos, text, audio, video, Flash movies, PDFs, Microsoft Word documents and more. We are adding new features all of the time to our system.
Will I be able to update the website?
Yes. Our unique content management system (CMS) makes it easy to update your website whenever you want. We have spent several years developing our CMS for users of all abilities. If you know how to send emails with attachments and have mastered the basics of a word-processing program like Microsoft Word, our CMS is easy to use.
How long will it take for you to build our website?
As you can imagine, a lot of organisations are seeking assistance from us, it generally takes no longer than a month for us to build a website for you. However, the waiting list can affect how soon we can start working with you.
Can you provide training?

The Scottish Community Foundation has given us a grant to provide training on how to use the CMS.
We can also advise you on web accessibility and usability issues. It is important that the content you add is easy to understand and can be read by as many people as possible. We want you to get the most out of your new website and will do as much as possible to help.
Are there any types of organisation you won't create websites for?
Our services will not be made available to religious organisations, unless they are registered as a charity, with a secular community designation that is separate from the church or religious organisation that provides services to people regardless of their religious beliefs, and does not propagate a belief in a specific faith.
We will not provide websites for any organisation that advocates, supports, or practices discrimination based on race, religion, age, ethnicity, national origin, language, size, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background or disability.
Organisations must be willing and able to confirm that they do not discriminate on any of these grounds.
